A 1790 house in Washington, a three-building compound in Warrenton and a midcentury home in Boise.

By Angela Serratore

Since it was built in the late 18th century, this house has been home to the owner of the town’s general store, a clubhouse for Yale athletes and a student dorm for the Frederick Gunn preparatory school. Its proximity to the center of town puts it within walking distance of restaurants and shops. The high-end Mayflower Inn & Spa is less than half a mile away.

Hartford and New Haven are about an hour away. Driving to the Berkshires, in Massachusetts, takes about 90 minutes, as does driving to the Hudson Valley, in New York. Manhattan is about two hours away.

Size: 3,402 square feet

Price per square foot: $323

Indoors: Wide stone steps lead up to the front door, which opens into a foyer with hardwood floors, a staircase to the second level and access to a powder room.

To the left is a living room with a fireplace, built-in bookshelves and windows looking out onto the front lawn. Off this space is a cozy home office with more built-ins.

On the other side of the foyer is a dining room with paneled wainscoting. This room connects to a kitchen with light-colored cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, a center island with a soapstone counter and a blue-and-white checkerboard floor that continues into a windowed breakfast area and family room. A screened porch is also in this part of the house.

All three bedrooms are on the second floor. The primary suite occupies the back half of this level, with backyard-facing windows and a private hallway linking the bedroom and bathroom, which has heated floors, a free-standing soaking tub and a walk-in shower. The other two bedrooms share a full bathroom. A laundry room is also on this level, off the main hall.

The third floor could be used as a home office, den or guest quarters.

Outdoor space: The spacious backyard is encircled by fencing to keep deer out. The detached garage has two parking spots and a lofted space that could be used for storage.

Taxes: $6,600 (estimated)

This property is adjacent to Fauquier Springs Country Club, near the Rappahannock River. Shenandoah National Park and Manassas National Battlefield Park are about 40 minutes away.

Driving to Washington takes a little over an hour. The University of Virginia is 90 minutes away, in Charlottesville. Richmond is less than two hours away. Virginia Beach is a three-and-a-half-hour drive.

Stairs in the living room lead up to the two bedrooms on the second floor. The primary bedroom has an updated en suite bathroom.
